I used to love the game Pitstop on the Commodore 64. I liked that your tyres would take damage and eventually explode, unless you took a pit stop and changed them.

This is a prototype of a top down racing game which was meant to have the same mechanic of damage and pit stop to change tyres and refuel, but it didn't get beyond basic driving and some (dodgy) collision detection.
